About Northern Polyphonic

Northern Polyphonic is a neuroqueer Art pop choir based in Northcote, Melbourne Australia. Formed in 2025, it is the musical brain-gremlin of musician-social worker Kate Beckwith, who saw a need for humans wanting to experience the healing effects of group singing, harmony and self-expression in a neuro-affirming and queer inclusive environment! It is inspired by Sister Act, musical gnomes and singing enthusiastically in undies around the house with a brush as a microphone.

The collective learn arrangements of popular songs with an emphasis on singer-songwriter material with heartfelt messages. The group also learn and practice musical skills such as harmony, body percussion, vocal blending, beatboxing, score reading and rhythm. The collective is musically supported by a trio of professional musicians including a conductor, pianist and drummer.

Northern Polyphonic considers the sensory and music learning needs of neurodiverse singers. The sessions begin with structured social connection activities and community guidelines which build the foundation of an inclusive space that honours strengths-based communication, neurodiversity, confidence building, self-regulation and trust.

Values of the group are underpinned by trauma-informed practice and strengths-based learning processes. These aim to affirm self-expression, humour, fun and neurodivergent ways of existing and learning. The rehearsal space is carefully curated to be low-lit with fairy lights, standing lamps with a soft space with couches and cushions as well as a wide space to stand and sing. There are multiple sensory regulation spaces set up during rehearsal sessions.

Northern Polyphonic has it's own choir mascot, Guru the greyhound, who gets lots of pats, cuddles and adoration from Northern Polyphonic singers. Afterall, he is a very good boy!

Northern Polyphonic aims to bring music expression, boldness and bravery into a space that facilitates creative healing and self-discovery.
